Watermelon Mint Margarita

The Watermelon Mint Margarita is the most refreshing summer cocktail — a vibrant, fruity twist on the classic Margarita that combines fresh watermelon, zesty lime, and premium 100% agave tequila. Blended with a hint of mint and served over ice, it’s the perfect drink for poolside lounging, beach days, or backyard barbecues.

At Cancun Tequila Tasting, we serve variations of this cocktail in our mixology classes at Lighthouse Restaurant, where guests learn to balance sweet, sour, and herbal flavors like a true bartender. Here’s how to make it at home — with a few pro tips from our certified agave specialists.

Why This Margarita Stands Out

While most margaritas rely on citrus, this version uses fresh watermelon for natural sweetness and a stunning pink hue. The addition of mint adds a cool, aromatic layer that makes it even more refreshing. It’s not just a cocktail — it’s a celebration of summer, perfect for warm weather and outdoor gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz (60 ml) 100% agave Blanco tequila
  • 1 cup (150g) fresh watermelon, cubed (seeds removed)
  • 0.75 oz (22 ml) fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz (15 ml) agave nectar (or simple syrup)
  • 6–8 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 cup ice
  • Garnish: lime wheel and fresh mint sprig
  • Optional: salt rim

How to Make a Watermelon Mint Margarita

  1. If desired, rim a chilled margarita or rocks glass with salt.
  2. In a blender, combine the watermelon, tequila, lime juice, agave nectar, mint leaves, and ice.
  3. Blend until smooth and slushy.
  4. Pour into the glass and garnish with a lime wheel and a sprig of mint.
  5. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Cocktail Tips from Our Tequila Masters

  • Use fresh watermelon — avoid pre-cut if it’s been refrigerated too long; it can dilute the flavor.
  • Muddle the mint slightly before blending to release its oils and enhance the aroma.
  • Chill your glass — it keeps the drink colder longer and enhances the refreshment.
  • Try it on the rocks — for a less icy, more sippable version, skip the blender and shake with ice.
  • Upgrade to Reposado tequila — for a smoother, oak-aged twist on the classic.
